Beginners' Questions Missing handles

I have a cirle which I want to change to an arc.  To do this I need to recover the three handles (two square and one round) which appear when you first create a cirlce.  But I cannot find any way to get those handles back.  I can recover three other sets of handles (I'll call them resize handles, rotate handles and Bezier node handles) but I cannot recover the original set of 3 handles which enable you to transform a circle to an arc or segment (or vv).

I am new to inkscape so it is quite probable that I am doing something very silly!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Is it actually a circle/ellipse? With the object selected, check the status bar at the bottom of the screen. It should say "Ellipse". If it says "Path" then you've converted the circle to a Bezier path, which is a one-way operation so you won't be able to get those handles back.

If it is an ellipse, double-click on it, or select it and click the Circle tool to show the handles.

Thank you, you are exactly correct.  I drew the circle some days ago and in the interim must have either inadvertently converted it to a Bezier path, or, worse, I have had/am having a senior moment.  Oh dear.  Thanks again,

With a Bezier path you can insert additional nodes where you want the start and end of the arc to be, then remove the segments between. See this topic for details:

Although removing parts of the ellipse or arc can be simply done like this, adding segments back is another matter entirely. So if you later need to extend your arc you'll find that starting with a fresh ellipse is easier.
