Beginners' Questions Making Cartoon Eyelids

I recently got started with Inkscape for the first time and I'm having trouble creating a cartoon character the way I want. I have gone through several tutorials on clipping and masking and I just haven't been able to get this to work.

I want this character to have eyelids like you would see in Family Guy, where the eyelid obscures the top half of the eye and the edges of the eyelid lines up with the edges of the white part of the eye. Additionally, I would like it to be adjustable, so I can easily adjust how open or closed the eyes are with a drag of the mouse.

Is this possible? It seems like it should be a basic task but I have not even gotten close to success with it.

Not in front of Inkscape right now, but there's a non destructive "Clip group" feature. In essence you will Clip/mask multiple elements by the eye shape and because the Z-Order plays a role you'll be able to have the the eyelids over the pupils for instance.

Thanks, I was able to make a test eye using the clip group feature, but I'm still not sure how to set up stroke on it properly so I have the black outline I'm looking for.

Here's my attempt using groups, clones and clips. Open the Layers dialog [Object > Layers and Objects...] or [shift+ctrl+l] to see the names of the shapes. They should be self explanatory. The black circle is parent to several clones. Use this to change the size and shape of the eyes. The "right eye" is a clone of the "left eye" so all changes should be made in the "left eye" group. Use the node tool to edit the "eyelid" rectangle. Use the select tool to rotate the whole eye or to move the "pupil".

This looks like it should work. What were the steps you took to set up the clipped overlay?

There are many ways to stack, group, clone and clip the various shapes. This workflow is made for clarity rather than efficiency. Use the node tool to edit shapes in the highlighted frame and see what happens in the final frame.
