Beginners' Questions Making a fast stroke with the calligraphy brush introduces noise

I've just installed Inkscape, and I absolutely love its calligraphy features. I'm using the 0.92 version. One thing which I couldn't find a solution to is when I draw a line very quickly using the calligraphy brush, it introduces noise. My settings are:

    width 6

    thinning -100

    angle 30

    fixation 27

    caps tremor wiggle 0

    mass 100

here is a video of what's happening: https://filebin.net/wpslhbya936e2nxo

Is it by design or I'm using the wrong settings?

    Welcome to the forum!

I can't play the video, never heard of MKV format.  But as long as I've been using Inkscape (over 12 years), I've never found a way to avoid this problem, and still draw fast.  I add a good bit of weight to it (which forces you to draw slowly), and the more weight, the smoother my lines are.  Mass I mean, not weight.

But I find a mass of 20 works well enough for me.  I see you're using 100.  Wish I could play your video.

Are you using a graphics tablet?  (I don't use one, for comparison.)

I don't know, maybe the upcoming version 1.0 (available now as beta) has some improvement?  Or maybe someone else knows a trick?

    Thank you!

    Yes, I'm using a tablet, Wacom cth-480.

Now I've noticed that the actual reason for this was the cursor going outside the canvas (it wasn't speed).

Changing mass to around 20 mostly helped (don't have to go outside the canvas as much)
I will try it in the beta version (but the pressure sensitivity didn't work for me there)

I've uploaded the video to Youtube: https://youtu.be/krzrh0pt24E

I've just tested it in the beta version and it seems that this doesn't happen there, and the pressure sensitivity is working now (it probably didn't work because the stable release wasn't installed).

    So that's good news!

Oh no, that's not what I've experienced at all!  It almost looks like the pen wasn't touching the surface well (I mean how it might look on a real piece of paper).

When you say outside the canvas, do you mean on the tablet?  I've never used a tablet, so I'm not familiar with how they work.  With a mouse, being outside the page border would not matter - everything should still be working as expected.  But how the tablet might affect it, I don't know.

Let us know if you still have trouble with the beta version.  Developers will want to fix that before release.

I wanted to say outside the drawing area,
so it happens whenever the cursor touches the tools, ruler or slider (and other controls or goes outside the window). And it doesn't happen as long as the cursor is inside the drawing area.

I've also just tested with the mouse and it didn't happen

For now the only problem with the beta version is that it feels a little bit laggy compared to the 0.92 version (could it be because it's portable?)

Yeah, that sounds like something related to the tablet.  And I have no experience with that.

I have seen reports about 1.0 beta being laggy in certain situations, but I don't remember the details at the moment.

Hopefully members with more experience with tablets or with 1.0 will comment.  Being Christmas Eve (where I am) or well it just switched over to Christmas Day, the forum probably won't be very busy.  But they'll be back 🙂

Have noticed the same thing happening with overlapping lines (in both 0.92 and beta):

    https://youtu.be/bYYWncYpWX0

It happens only with subsequent lines, i.e. if I draw a line, then don't lift the pen from the tablet and try to overlap the line (so the line overlapping itself) it doesn't happen. But when I stop drawing the first line and start a new line and overlap the first one it happens then.

Also seems to only appear when "Trace lightness" is on.

Please report bugs at https://inkscape.org/report . Thank you!

Yes, that definitely looks buggy to me.  I would report that.  Let us know if you need any help with the report.  It's a pretty easy job.  The form asks you the questions, and you just answer them.  And then watch for replies, in case developers have further questions or need more documentation.
