I'm using inkscape 1.2.1 on Windows and I would like to reduce the size of the sidebar.

I like having all the tools I have used open, but the way it currently displays all the icons for every open tool are shown. Is there a way to make the sidebar narrower? The attached photo shows a slightly more extreme version than I usually have where the sidebar is nearly half the screen

Just click+drag the vertical separator to the right. See the three dots?

This is the narrowest it will go without collapsing entirely. The problem is the tools in the sidebar have a minimum width and there isn't a way I can see to make them take up less space.

Now I understand, but I don't have a solution. The minimum width of the sidebar is determined by the widest open dialog and some are much bigger than others. All I can suggest is closing the dialogs you're not using. It's not much, I know.

In my opinion, the sidebar is still too wide, and there is too much empty space in it. Space for documents becomes very limited.
(I refer to Inkscape 1.3.2) I expect that it could be set to no more than 1/3 of the window.

Sidebar width adapts to the widest panel used but also to display tabs names when possible, sometimes leading to wider sidebar (Align and distribute panel - a long name - often widen sidebar once selected). Once wide, it remains wide util you manually shrink it.

Screen resolution has a big part in this.

The 1920x1080 screen is shown belowΒ with just the Objects dialog open:
