I'm on the Mac Beta (1.0.0beta1 (32d4812). I got here by accepting the Catalina update, discovering the zsh change (in OSX), finding the Inkscsape beta for Mac (yeay!) then ...
In Inkscape, using File/Open, and getting the finder dialog, I cannot get access to any folder on my drive. Image of Error message is attached, and the text is "Could not read the contest of Documents Error opening diredtory < path > . Operation not permitted.
Is this a new OSX setting that I have to change, or is there a deeper probelm? Should I just go back to my happy pre-Catalina days?
I posted the original question. I was able to download the beta on my iMac (with Catalina) and have been using Inkscape without a problem. I did have to manually remove/delete the old Inkscape app via my application folder in Finder to allow the beta to work.
Prior to removing the old Inkscape app from my App folder, I wasn't able to properly complete the Beta install. The Inkscape Beta app wouldn't override the old Inkscape app and I couldn't properly launch it. It just showed Inkscape with a slash through it on my App folder. I deleted the old app and downloaded the Beta again...Inkscape is now working.
I read here about a workaround offered by Benjamin Bellamy. It seems to be working for me -- I can open and save as expected ... so far. So you may want to try following the instructions to invoke Inkscape via the Terminal, and then when offered the dialog to allow access to your files, click OK.
I also have the problem that my Inkscape does not work on MacOS Catalina. So, after I have read this threat, I deleted Inkscape and wanted to download the new Inkscape 1.0 Beta (see second screenshot). The file is 130 MB in size and if I want to install it with a double-click from the downloads folder, only a picture appears? I add it here as a screenshot. Can someone help me there? Unfortunately I'm a idiot regarding "computer stuff" :(.
@Konstanze The item in that disk image, "Inkscape.app" is the Inkscape application itself. Copy it into your Applications folder, and launch it from within Applications. There is not a separate installer that you need to run.
thank you for your reply!! I dont have the App anymore, because I completely deleted Inkscape (not XQuartz or X11). I thought I had to delete the old version and install the new version. So am I right that I have to install Inkscape 0.92 and afterwards I have to install Inkscape 1.0 Beta...is it sort of an "add on"...so that the "old version" is compatible with MacOS Catalina?
But I dont have any Inkscape App on my Laptop? When I search for "Inkscape" there is no match...I'm sorry, I am really a idiot regarding this technical stuff :(.....I have read in this thread that I dont need X11 or XQuartz, so I can delete that....but I still dont know what I have to do after downloading the Inkscape 1.0 Beta? Sorry :(...When I double click on it in the "downloads" the pic (I added before) appears....but there is no "App" I can move it to? Thank you so much for your patience!!!
When you double click the "DMG" (an abbreviation for "disk image") file in your download folder, that opens up the Inkscape disk image. That's the thing that you showed with the picture background and the Inkscape.app icon. Look at the picture that you posted, and recognize that "Inkscape.app" is there.
As I said, you need to COPY that item, Inkscape.app, to your Applications folder. Usually, you would drag the Inkscape.app icon into the Applications folder.
I hope I now understood it ... so I downloaded Inkscape 1.0 Beta and then pushed the "dmg-thing" out of my downloads into my programs ("I hope that's aplications in german"). I have attached two screenshots. If I then make a double click on inkscape in aplications there is again but only the picture appaearing....and I cant open my .svg files..... I'm a technical dork, I am really sorry ...
ah thank you!! Oh my god!!! Now I have seen it in the picture !!!Thank you!! I pulled the app into the aplications and now I can see the inkscape-icon in the bottom bar of the Mac again (and in the aplications)... the svg. files are displayed unpixeld (good sign), but if I double-click on a svg. file or click the right buttom ("open with inkscape") the files do not open ...
I just tried. Closed it and opened it again. When I try to open a svg. file within Inkscape the app "hangs itself"..its loading and loading and loading...but after a while I need to shut down inkscape, because nothing is happening (but loading). Also as soon as I try to open a inkscape file within inkscape (even when I just move the cursor to the svg. file within inkscape) it "hangs itself" again?? damn :(....
I am running 10.15 and XQuartz and have Inkscape installed and it runs just fine. But many of my student told me their common apps not working on macOS Catalina. There can be quite a few reasons for an application to fail to launch, but the most likely cause, is a 32-bit app dropped my macOS error. This article also gives specific explanations on this matter.
Thank you for your reply! I now change to MacOS Mojave again, becuase it just didnt work and I needed it for work. I think I will wait till a proper version of inkscape for Catalina is launched ;)
Hi all, I noticed that only the apps that "ask" the right to access to the folders (generally Desktop and Download) work fine, the ones that I added manually to the Privacy list (as showed by @holyfeld) doesn't work or has lot of problems.

Is anyone else unable to access Inkscape after downloading the new Catalina IOS Mac update? Can't launch X11 or Inkscape now...
Inkscape does not work on iOS.
If you're asking about Inkscape on a Mac running Catalina (macOS 10.15), please use the Inkscape 1.0 beta, which does not require XQuartz or X11.
You can download it from https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0/?latest=1
Thank you!!!๐
Inkscape is not working on my macbook anymoore, downloaded the latest beta version, is not compatibel with Catalina OS??
Inkscape 1.0 (beta) does run on macOS 10.15 Catalina.
Thanks and congrats on 1.0 !

@John_AdamYes, this is a known and very serious issue. ( https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues/459 )
You can open an SVG file by double-clicking it in the Finder.
Partial fix for my file opening problem (above). Use finder's right click to choose an app for the file. Seems to work.
(I should have added to the previous message that I have given Inkscape permission for the whole drive.)
@John_Adam How were you able to give permission for the drive?

@oskay To grant disk access
In my case, it doesn't make a different. I still get the error message. The conversation here https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues/459 shows a couple of work arounds.

The old versions (Inkscape < 1.0) are not compatible with Catalina. Inkscape 1.0 does not use X11 or XQuartz; it is a full native Mac app.
But I dont have any Inkscape App on my Laptop? No, take that out of your Applications ("Programme") folder. It does not belong there.
You need to copy Inkscape.app into your Applications ("Programme") folder.
s***๐...and where do I find the inkscape.app?
Look at the pictures that you've posted. Look where it says "Inkscape.app" -- that's the thing that goes in the Applications folder.
ah thank you!! Oh my god!!! Now I have seen it in the picture !!!Thank you!! I'm not sure what the issue is. Try opening Inkscape first, and opening your SVG file from within Inkscape.
I just tried. Closed it and opened it again. Hello. I installed Inkscape beta version on MacOs Catalina and it runs EXTREMELY slow. Is there any solutions for this? Thank you.
I probably wouldn't have found that icon at first, either... It's well hidden in the picture.
@vbnmvbnj Try the latest version from the development branch, it should be considerably faster.

Thanks for understanding ๐
@Maren Hachmann Do you mean the one I downloaded from https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0/?latest=1 ? I wait 10 seconds bezier tool to follow up. And everything else.
@vbnmvbnj Can you make a new thread for your problem, please? It will need some more detailed info, too.
I think it is better to wait for an update as Catalina is pretty new. In my case, I was getting apple error 4013 while running Inkscape.
DrBetsy86, please look for your message in its own topic (I moved it).
