Beginners' Questions Layers Not Saved
  1. #1

Hi I am new to Inkscape,

I created my first work with 5 layers and saved it as a .svg.

When I opened it again all 5 objects were there... but all on one layer, the other layers I had created weren't there anymore.

Is this normal, or did I do something wrong to make this happen?

    Thanks,

    Matt.

Did you accidentally saved as "Optimized SVG"  instead of Plain- or Inkscape-SVG?

Thanks for mentioning that, I had my doubts as well so I just did a test...

I created a new image with just 3 layers, I then saved it as inkscape svg, then saved it again as plain svg. Either way when I reopen there is just layer 1 and down the bottom it says "Group of 3 objects in layer Layer 1".

    The layer should stay intact.

Can you check this file which contains 4 layers what can be checked out by going main menu->Objects->Objects…

Thanks... I tried your file and the results were interesting.

When I clicked on the objects menu all the objects appear to be the same object, however when I click the small + symbol all four layers are there and can be turned on/ off individually.

However when I click on the Layer > Layers... everything is on the one layer.

Does this mean that when i reopen an Inkscape document I need to move everything back onto layers somehow?

    That´s how it´s looking here:

File open... should preserve layers. Import or drag and drop does not preserve layers. Could this be the issue here?

Yes...that is the issue. I can't believe it was something so simple... I have never come across that before.

Thanks so much for helping me through this.
