I am using Inkscape 1.1.1 (3bf5ae0d25, 2021-09-20) on Windows 10 64-bit.
When I use the Text & Font tool and change text to italics, the content of the displayed text box changes to random characters. The text shown in the Text & Font window does not change, only the text in the editing area. Also, when I export to png, the altered characters are output, not the characters showing in the Text & Font tool.
After closing the file (it crashed at some point while creating this post - which is another issue altogether) and opening it again, the characters are displayed as expected.
The attached shows a screen capture of 2 identical text objects.
Steps:
1. Created the 1st text block from scratch (no copy/paste from outside). 2. Applied the font (Neutraface 2 Text Book) and font size (20). 3. Created a copy of the first object and applied italics.
1st text block: "High" 2nd text block: "Jkij" italicised but with "k" and "i" overlapping.
Am I missing something here? Why would the displayed characters change? Is there a way to resolve this without closing and opening the file each time?
Thank you for the suggestion Polygon. I tried it (Remove Manual Kerns) and there was no visible impact.
I'm attaching another image to show that the italicized characters in the editing pane are different than those showing in the Text & Font tool text area. FYI, this example was captured from a completely different svg file experiencing the same issue.

Try: Text->Remove Manual Kerns. and see if this helps.

All fonts, or just this font?
Is it a text object at all? Just asking.
@Polygon Yes, it is a text object. (And yes, that needed to be checked! 😉 )
@TylerDurden I don't know right now. I'll investigate and come back to you asap.
You can upload this simple example SVG for further investigation.
