Beginners' Questions Installing font

Hello, I am using 0.92 on Windows 10.

I am having trouble adding new fonts which I downloaded from dafont.com.

Always went well in the past, but now it does not add new fonts.

I did install the new fonts since they are available in Word.. Just not Inkscape,,,.

    Any tips?

Someone else asked about this just recently. Take a look at this thread (non-English, unfortunately).

    https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/moacir_99Fch/

In summary, try restarting Inkscape, and possibly your PC too. Check you installed the font for all users. Finally, if the font isn't well made (which is possible from a free site) it simply may not work in Inkscape, and there's nothing can be done.

    Cheers z3z,

    Already found the solution:

First save the file at your desktop or another folder.

Copy the file to Fonts folder

    Then install.

    😀

Cool, glad you got it sorted, and thanks for sharing your solution for others. 🙂

Before this "solution" that accidentally worked starts to circulate, here's how to properly do it:

    • Copy/extract the font file to a convenient writable folder on disk (e.g. the downloads folder)
    • Right click the file
    • Choose "Install for all users" from context menu
    • Start/Restart Inkscape

Note that if you are the only user on the computer, that option is not available.  For situations where there is only one user on the computer, I'm not aware of any workable solution, except for this comment of a closed bug report:   https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues/50#note_138519712    However, except for the one successful report in that comment, I haven't heard any other confirmation that it works.

Sorry, but that's just not true. I'm the "only user" on my computer (see attachement) and the screenshot showing the option above was taken on my computer.

That said, even on a computer with "only one" user there are always more accounts (for example the "Administrator" account that is automatically generated by Windows, also visible in the attachement)

I can imagine two reasons why the option is actually missing:

    • Users try to install a font that is still in a compressed archive. Windows won't offer the full context menu here
    • Users have an account without administrative privileges. As installing the font "For all users" requires administrative privileges it might be hidden then.

Well, I've seen those things explained to Windows 10 users who are having this problem, and they still were not able to solve the problem.  I have to imagine that most of the time they're going to some other program for text.

Brynn, could it possibly be a win 7 issue? you and I both use Win7, however, I'm not the only user, nor the owner on my laptop, I'm a user and admin.  Yet I also don't see to install for all users.  I have the option to install as an admin, and that seems to install it everywhere on the pc (from what I can tell anyway).  (and I've installed tons of fonts).

That's the same option, just under a different name. We usually write 'install for all users or as admin, depending on what option you see in the right-click menu'.

    😀

This problem does not exist on Windows 7.

In fact it didn't even exist until Windows 10 build 1809. This particular build of Windows started to install fonts into a user-specific location by default.

I've installed fonts in such a way.

First, I've made a research and found some fonts I would like to use. In general, I use one website to go within. I choose the required font. The last one was the Mexican font taken from fontsly.com but I do not remember its name. Just remember that is was available only for personal use. After this, I downloaded itand unzip to the general font folder. you can always find the instructions in archive how to install the particular font.

I am running Inkscape on Zorin OS... I noticed that Inkscape is not showing even the default fonts. I then downloaded and installed fonts and verified that the font viewer is showing the fonts i installed. I opened Inkscape and the fonts are still not listed. What do i need to do to correctly show the fonts i installed? Here is the screenshot...

    🙈

Is Inkscape installed as a snap? If so, try a real package for your OS or the AppImage.

(try 'snap list' on the command line (https://snapcraft.io/docs/getting-started to find out)

No, it is not a snap... I tried installing Inkscape from the software store but I can't get it to work properly as it always crashes so I downloaded the program .exe from the inkscape.org website.and installed it instead. Not really sure at this point which version (windows/linux) I am using. I did run the command you mentioned and it did not have Inkscape on the list.

I checked the software store and I saw that there are now 2 versions listed for Inkscape (0.92 and 1.0.2). I uninstalled the .exe version and installed 1.0.2. Inkscape now lists all the fonts so my font problem is now solved. Thanks for the assist.
