Expected: new window created for the second image becomes the foreground window
Actual: the new window is created and Inkscapes switches spontaneously back and forward between the two windows about twice per second. This continues until one of the windows is closed.
This makes the software unusable if you need more than one image open at the same time.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Inkscape using the windows .exe installer without improvement.
Tried different .SVG files without improvement.
Tried resetting preferencex.xml to default without improvement.
OS: Windows 10 Home 21H1 Inkscape: 1.1 64 bit downloaded today from Inkscape site.
Two monitors, if that still counts as special, but nothing else unusual.
I couldn't find a similar problem mentioned on forum or git as issue.
@johngh I am also having this issue, as of today, using same OS. Did you ever find a solution or was the issue you reported solved?? Thanks in advance...
It's discussed at https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/2827, Not solved yet, but only happens if the documents have grids and the document property dialog is open. So my workaround is to close that dialog before doing anything else - probably a good idea anyway as it seems to be associated with various problems in 1.1.
Thanks - I was having the same issue. I appreciate the guidance. Still was happening when I opened previous documents if I didn't go in and close all of the docked dialogs. I just changed the Dialog behavior in the preferences from Dockable to Floating and that solved that problem. Now if I open document properties to tweak something it is easy enough just to close it before switching windows. Slight inconvenience for frequently used dialogs, but not a major thing.
1. Open an existing .svg file in Inkscape
2. Open a second existing .svg file

That is very unusual John, this is the first I've heard of the issue.
Can you report it to https://inkscape.org/report ?
Done.

The bug seems to occur if the grid and document properties are visible. https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/2827
I'd try closing the document properties or hiding the grid, if they are visible, before opening another document.

Thank you both. that's a great help 👍

Pure genius work around for a problem that has occurred for months. Purchased new PC, then spent weeks trying to upgrade video drivers.
