My Inkscape text seems to be shot through with a pattern that I can't get rid of. I would like just normal text. I've tried coloring it but it seems just to produce an underlay. Can someone please tell me what I have done to make this happen (and how to undo it!). It doesn't seem to affect anything else.

Looks like you (or Inkscape) added some stroke to the Text/font. Go Fill and Stroke panel and delete Stroke.
I kinda like that look... good for DIY Captcha.
Yeah - looks like a good old CRT TV display glitch.
