Beginners' Questions Inkscape can't open file - encountered an internal issue

    Hello,

I just created my first file with inkscape, when I tried to change a font style the file crashed. I am trying to reopen the file linked below and each time I get an error message "inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now".

I am using a MAC and the current version of inkscape. Any recommendations or will i have to recreate my drawings again?

    Thank you!

No issue opening the file here, but I don't have those fonts installed. (Inkscape 1.2, Linux Mint)

Here is the file with substitute fonts, maybe the previous fonts on your machine are wonky.

    Hi Tyler,

Thank you for the quick return. I still am getting the same error message when I try to open your file too.

Would you be able to delete all fonts? Maybe i have too many images/vectors?

    Thank you! Brielle

Confirm it opens in UM22.04 Inkscape 1.2 but in @TylerDurden file on my system it still shows one wrong font. Initially OP's file had 3.

    Tyler's file opens fine also.

Oops... missed that one, and that has zero characters, so let's try again.

Whoo!! That was the issue! File opens great. I will just make sure not to sure that font.

    Thanks for all the help!

Could be the font, could be the empty text area... at least you are back on track. 👍

Looking at original file it seems to be from some gallery.

Thus does OP have Pacific Again, Monotype Corsiva and American Typewriter on system?

Don't believe that is problem tend to agree with @TylerDurden about the empty text area.

Could @brielegallet try this file with the one bad font and see if it will open?

    Edit: Spelling

    Hi @mendy,

I got the same error trying to open your file - "inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now".

When looking at my font book for the computer, it shows all three fonts. But when I try and use Monotype Corsiva the file again crashes. So there must be something wrong with that font. I'll have to look into redownloading or just not using.

Thanks again for all the help!

OK agree with @TylerDurden Now don't think it is a font problem.

    Two things to try

1: Close Inkscape, start a new file, Press A (Create and edit text objects) on left toolbar, with mouse click and drag on canvas to create a blue rectangle. At this point normally you would just start typing your text but for this test just draw the rectangle, release the mouse and do not enter text but at top of left toolbar hit the select arrow. Now save the file, close Inkscape and reopen file and see if it gives error.

    Then

2: Open Inkscape, start new file and enter text with the offending Text (In this case Monotype Corsiva), then save file and see if it opens correctly. If 1 fails and 2 opens it would seem that the problem is on a Mac version of Inkscape opening a document with Text flowed frame with no text in it.

Below is link that shows the rectangle and text creation.

    Hi,

Just ran into this issue with another font on a different document. Can someone help me delete the text I tried to change to "garamond"?

@mandy - i did these two scenarios. Had no issue with #1, but with #2 the second i select the offending fonts (monotype corsiva or garamond) inkscape immediately stops working and sends me the error. I am no even able to change anything or save anything.

    Thanks for the help,

    Brielle

Are you creating the problem documents or downloading from somewhere? The houses open fine UM22.04 Inkscape 1.2.

I downloaded the three fonts in the house and created a new svg with just the text vs removing the fonts as file is large and goes against the data limit of forum. See if it opens for you. Fonts I used were from Cofonts.com. With issues should just use fonts in new document and verify working before spending time with the other elements.

Back had another thought, absolutely not familiar with Mac but maybe a problem with font permissions.

Here I just drag font into my font folder and it works.

Search for Mac Font Permissions, maybe yours are locked?

@mandy - i am creating documents as new. the font issues i am running into are when i am changing one font style to a different one. that is when the file sends the error messages and closes. prohibiting me from reopening the file and changing the font. i can't access the house file at all.

the two fonts i am so far having issues with "garamond" and "monotype corsiva" are fonts on my mac.

@mandy - i was able to download and open your 3 fonts attachment no problem. i tried re-downloading garamond but was still not able to open the file. Also checked on permissions and there are no issues there.

OK sounds like different problem than original question.

Now as I understand you create a file and when you change font it locks up

1: Create file with your garamond text make no changes and save, close Inkscape (just for test) re-open Inkscape and does file open?

2: If it opens then from what I understand now that when you try to change the text it locks up.

3: The file (3fonts) from above opens and if you try to change fonts it also locks up? Or initially it opens after you downloaded it,                 "@mandy - i was able to download and open your 3 fonts attachment no problem. i tried re-downloading garamond but was still not able to open the file. Also checked on permissions and there are no issues there." Lost in able to download and open and then still not able to open the file.

4: New Test.svg is your original file stripped of everything but text. See if this opens as in 2 Opens fine here and on my system shows the three fonts not installed but it opens with different fonts substituted for the non installed ones.

In some cases, the fonts themselves cause issues.

In some other cases font face samples being displayed in the dropdown menu causes issues. Those fonts may have special characters or non-Arabic faces. The face-samples can be turned off in the Text tool preferences.

i swear i am losing my mind haha

thank you both @tylerdurden and @mandy for trying to help me.

So I have been messing around with mandy's suggestions. I opened a new document, created a text box in garamond. was able to select the font without the file crashing and type with the font. saved the file. and was able to reopen. As well as open the other file that i previously couldn't because of the font. I did this again with monotype corsiva and had no issues at all.

But, i have another file that I have a different font style that crashed it. I tried opening that file after having success with garamond, and could not open the file. Then couldn't open the test file that i created with garamond. This seems like a very bizarre issue. Maybe my MAC is old? Version 11.6.4

How many fonts are installed?  Might be this bug: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/1465

i believe that i have solved this issue. just save your file as you use to. once that you saved your file go into the properties from it and search for the option that allows you to change the name. there you add the extension. for instance the name is "Fons" well, then add ".svg" and that's it. i hope that you can solve this problem with it
