Beginners' Questions Import, Export, Save Problems.

Hi, I've been using Inkscape for a while now and have recently installed the latest and current version. ( As of 02-06-2021). I do believe I have found a VERY and SERIOUS error in the new program and would like someone to look further into this problem with me so other users don't fall into this trap.

As far as I know, this only happens when saving and exporting your work and has only manifested since the so called new and improved way to export a file or document. Exporting and saving is, to me, an area that could do with improving and the problem I have found, is that when saving a document to import, this actually generates the PNG, BUT, and HOWEVER, if you then hit EXPORT and OVERWRITE, this is where the problem occurs. I find that it doesn't overwrite but actually kills the file, so if you close all Inkscape down, then try to access and open the Inkscape svg file, I find that the file will not open. Therfore, If you have done this with your work, and want to access it at a later date, you may find you won't be able to. You MAY NOW have lost all your work. I have not reported this in the BUG fix area as I have just had to register to report my findings. This is my experience and I hope that it may save someone from losing their work and IF I am right, some good person who is more familiar with the Inkscape community than myself can maybe replicate this anomaly and report it appropriately.

I hope this is as understood as I intended it to be and hope it saves someone some any heartache by losing any important work they have compiled.

    Many Thanks

Please describe, step-by-step, the sequence which results in unexpected behavior.

With more playing with this anomaly, I am still able to reproduce the behaviour. With the previous version, When EXPORTING, you were able to select the file name from a created drop down list of previous versions of you saved work. This file name would have the .SVG prefix and saving it by overwriting were not a problem. However, Now trying to save with this .svg prefix and overwriting then exporting DOES STILL KILL the program. To test it for yourself, I would suggest using a file that you are able to sacrifice. I am still trying to wrap my head around this anomaly and are using duplicates of my work to sacrifice in reproducing this error I am finding. I do think it's a bug that should be looked at especially as to what it does to the actual Inkscape file once closed down and then to try and access the file.
