I have been using InkScape to make scrollsaw and Intarsia patterns. The most favored tool is the Bezier tool but sometimes I think I need to use a more freehand approach. However when I attempt to use the freehand pen, either via mouse or tablet, it looks so sloppy like done by a 3 year old. Is there a tool, filter or extension in InkScape that can kind of smooth out the jagged lines kind of in the manner of how smooth the Bezier curves are? I have a provide a link to a picture showing how bad the freehand drawing looks.

freehand drawing that would be nice to smooth out
You can try Path->Simplify but a manually tracing would not take more than 20 nodes. I'd go this route as it is quicker imho.
There are smoothing settings for when you are drawing...

The Path->Simplify seems to be a good first pass. I did that and was happy with the results. But I will also investigate the smoothing settings
