Beginners' Questions How to produce a pattern fill with whole objects only?

    Hi

I have a simple dot pattern that I've created and want to fill an object, but I want whole units only and not have them cut off. Is this possible somehow?

This is what I have now:

This is what I want to have (approx):

    Thanks

Maybe Tracing via Tiled Clone will work for you:

Oh wow, that looks great. But unfortunately it's not working for me. I have my settings exactly the same but it continues to put the whole 12x12 group of circles rather than flowing into the shape of the object beneath, regardless of if I have the "Trace the drawing under..." option selected.

Is there anything else required to modify the objects? I've turned them both into paths but that didn't help.

    Thank you for your feedback

Make sure  the "dot" is above/over the shape it traces. Have you that?

Yeah, I've tried that. I assume there isn't anything else required like copying in the object like with the "pattern along path" function?

    Here's my setup:

    Edit:

or with it aligned top and left corner

Mmmh - looks good from what I see. Maybe test my file and/or upload our example file to compare:

I downloaded your example and had the same issue. This makes me think it is my setup that is different somehow, but really odd. I'm using v1.0 (4035a4fb49, 2020-05-01) by the way

And just looking at the clone preferences. Are these the same as yours?

Thank you so much for your help by the way, I really appreciate it!

Strange - I have the same (default) settings about Clones in the Preferences. The other thing is I´m on macOS and using 1.0 (6e8a6fa6, 2020-07-08) - so I´m running out of ideas. Please upload your file - maybe there´s something different we´re overlooking.

Attached. I wasn't sure whether preferences and settings are preserved in a file upload? But thanks for looking!

The objective was trying to flow the dots into the big chevron type thing..

    Thanks

    Attached

I can´t see it right now. Is upload after 5min not completed?

I rekon it's a bug. Workaround is to also tick the opacity box.

I believe that´s for another purpose:

True. but works here, and opacity is easy to fix en masse if needed.

(I'm demonstrating on 1.0 under Linux.)

    .92.xx works as expected.

Sorry, the file was there but not showing as an attachment. fixed now.

Ticking the opacity still doesn't alter it however

Copy the settings in my attachment and use fully saturated base object like red/blue/green/magenta.

oh! with the opacity setting you're right, it has done this.

Although I see what you mean with the saturation and other options. Because the triangle was black, HSL were all set to 0 and not used. Trying blue gives me an odd result though

Yes. The workaround is not without its own issues, but you might experiment and find a useful combination.

Umpf - are you serious about the point size at 0,612px?? Are you trying to simulate offset printing? 😅
