Beginners' Questions How to deassociate objects from any layer?

Imagine I modify an image by creating a layer called ABC and moving a few objects into that layer.

Now imagine that, some time later, I want those objects to be layerless again. I don't want them to be part of layer ABC, or any layer for that matter.

I can't find any in-app or online instructions for that. There are ample instructions for sending a layerless object to a layer -- and none that I can find for the reverse direction.

How can I do that in Inkscape, please? Thanks in advance.

Layers are a trick in Inkscape to add functionality similar to other illustration software. They are specially tagged groups.

SO... a layer can be converted into a conventional group in the Layers & Objects dialog, then it can be ungrouped to place its contents in the document's "root".

Thank you very much, Tyler. That is really helpful.

After exploring your answer, I realized that it's available in Inkscape version 1.3. My work team was standardized on Inkscape 1.1, which did not have the "Layer to Group" option.

In the meantime, I accidentally discovered a solution that works under Inkscape version 1.1... so, to any 1.1ers out there, here's what I found:

    1) In the image, select the in-layer object.

    2) Open the XML Editor pane (Ctrl-Shift-X). Inkscape opens the pane and highlights the in-layer object.

    3) In the pane toolbar, locate the "Unindent node" button and click it. Inkscape moves the object up a level -- which is the same as moving it out of the layer.
