Beginners' Questions How to crop so I only get what's inside the frame?

    Hey all,

    I'm having some issues with what I thought would be a basic task. I downloaded a .svg file and just need to have what's inside the rectangle. So far the closest I've gotten to the result I want is selecting my rectangle then lines, then hitting "Intersection". I attached a picture of the "aftermath". I've tried just about every other path option so I'm a bit lost. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Use Object->Set->Clip instead.

    I gave this a shot and visually it looks right. But when I click on the lines it shows the bounding box of the original size of that layer. And when I import it to my laser program, it shows the original size as well.

    Ah ok - you didn´t mentioned the machine process.

    Is it possible to combine all the elevation lines into one combined path with Path->Combine? Then the Path->Intersection should work. It´s hard to tell from 190x131px screenshot.

    The issue you might run into is that Inkscape (and every other software using Boolean algorithms) expect shape or watertight objects instead of just open lines.

    Let´s see how this will work out for so far.

    Yeah I should've mentioned that, my bad!

    So after importing the file I had set up in Lightburn, I was able to use the intersection option and it worked exactly how I wanted it, which is great but I'd also like to figure it out for Inkscape as well. I had already combined and then used intersection to which I got a result like yours, but when I clicked on it afterward it still seems like the rest of what I clipped out is still part of the layer. Strange how it works in Lightburn but not Inkscape.

    Since I converted the strokes to paths and it also imported correctly into Lightburn as engraving lines, I assume all of my lines are closed but maybe Inkscape disagrees?

    Doesn´t look normal as you can see from my example. Check with enabled node tool if there are some extra nodes you might select+delete.

    This extension might help you.  https://gitlab.com/moini_ink/inx-pathops

    It will execute boolean operations on all the paths in a selection. I used the [Cut Path] option to make this image.
