I've been using Inkscape for a couple of years, every once in a while to design posters etc. to our amateur theatre. I usually do kinda easy stuff, not very compilcated design projects, so I can work with Inkscape but I'm no master in it. Usually when I design a page, I draw background (for example) fairly over the document edges, because sometimes when I print it could be like 1mm short of the edge, so I do this to avoid that. Now I have designed this poster where other elements too go over the edge. When I import it as PNG it works 'cause I can select it to be just the page. Now the problem is, I'm supposed to use the finished poster on some other stuff too (program, newspaper ads etc.), including that I could edit it still.
So, I need to get everything on the page only to be saved as SVG but so that nothing continues over the edges of the page, is it possible somehow? I have attached a screenshot of my project so you can see what I'm talking about. The blue guide lines close to the edges of page show where the page edges are. Everything over the blue lines should be cropped off (background, chess print, gears etc), so I can use it on other stuff too, but so I can still move every piece separately if I need to.
I tried to google an answer to this question but I don't know what words to use in my search to get answer to the right issue.
My windows is 10, and Inkscape is v. 1.1.
Sorry for any spelling errors etc., english is not my first language.
Draw a rectangle over the area you want to print then change the page size to match. Select the rectangle, then [File > Document Properties > Resize page to content > Resize page to drawing or selection] or use the keyboard shortcut [ctrl+shift+r]. Delete or hide the rectangle and export your page.
I'm looking for this, too. I need to hard-crop a drawing and export it as SVG such that the resulting file stops exactly at the set boundaries. There can be absolutely nothing outside of it.
I tried a mask with "set clip" but while that hides everything outside, it doesn't prevent it being part of the exported SVG. I tried CTRL-SHIFT-R which sets the page but even "export page" includes features outside the boundary. "Export Selected Only" doesn't help because trying to select the region will automatically include the full extend of the selected elements.

@Paddy_CAD If I understand correctly he wants an SVG including just content within the page border - not a raster image export:
I thought PDF will do but some viewers/editors will still displayMaintain content outside the page. Asked in chat - so far no answer.
Yes, I misunderstood the question. Perhaps this is the solution. https://inkscape-manuals.readthedocs.io/en/latest/clipping-and-masking.html
