Beginners' Questions How to create a path only for outline of font with bolder stroke style.

    I'm attempting to create a path for a font and to begin with I used object to path. However the resulting path wasn't bold enough for my use so I went back and increased the stroke style. I then used Object to path but got the same result as before. So far so good. This path I then increased the stroke style on and did "Stroke to Path" however it does not take the fill into account  and thus I have an "inner stroke path" too. I would like to remove all these extra paths and only have the "outer" path left without having to delete it all manually. That workflow would be too time consuming for what I need to use it for.

    So is there a way where I can get just get the outlines of the stroke converted to a path? I have enclosed a picture of what I'm trying to do. In the upper text I have done stroke to path and in the below Object to path. Neither is what I need, However if I could get only the outline of the lower text with the fill and stroke taken into consideration (all borders between black and white) then I should have what I need. I hope it makes sense and that there is some way of doing this without having to manually delete the inner stroke.

    This requires a lot of steps not obvious:

    Add Stroke to text to make it bold

    Convert with Object to path - then ungroup - all should be still selected

    Then Stroke to Path - ungroup again - select all if not still seleted

    Then Path->Union - done

    I tried the steps you wrote but I don't seem to get the result I'm after. I've labeled your steps with numbers and enclosed an image of what I get at the different steps. It seems to go wrong at step 3, where the fill disappears and doing union doesn't remove the "inner path"

    1. Add Stroke to text to make it bold
    2. Convert with Object to path - then ungroup - all should be still selected
    3. Then Stroke to Path - ungroup again - select all if not still seleted
    4. Then Path->Union - done

    Maybe I don´t understand exactly what you´re after:

    The result you're getting is exactly what I want, however, when I do it I do not get the same thing. Is there something fundamental I'm missing in this?

    Please check status bar if there´s any group still remaining after converting. What font is this?

    My status bar says there are no groups left after I have done ungroup. I have enclosed the font I use, I increase the stroke style with 1.8mm and the ellipse I make is 100mm in diameter on the horizontal side and 93 mm on the vertical side.

    Mmmh - still works here - or I miss something obvious:

    It feels very likely that it's something obvious I just don't know about. I've made another little gif showing my whole program interface. Hopefully that can point us in the right direction.

    I just noticed it looks like when you do ungroup after having done stroke to path, your outer and inner paths seems like they get a selection each. Mine do not do that. Is it something to do with that? I have nothing to ungroup after having done stroke to path. Also says that in the status bar.

    Or do I happen to haver an old version somehow? my version is 0.92

    Now in slow motion:

    text - add stroke

    Object to path

    ungroup

    Stroke to Path

    Path union.

    Please try again.

    I've recorded it once again including increasing the stroke this time.

    Well I tried everything I can think of. What´s weird is your text color is set to "Unset" though it´s black.

    Can you please take the text tool "T" click and type "Helena" - set the fill color to red from the color palette - add stroke and set different color with shift+click on color palette and check Status bar for Fill:+Stroke: now - it should display the color for fill+stroke - nothing should set to "Unset"

    I think that´s the culprit here.

    Ok I've tried what you suggested and enclosed another gif of what happens. Doesn't seem to work. Also I can't get the "T" to let me type text. Only the A with a cursor will do that. Am I doing something wrong?

    Super Strange - it seems the second "ungroup" do nothing - you should receive 12 separate objects.

    Here´s one last with outline view:

    Your last video made me realize what the issue were. I didn't have that display view you used, and I was certain I had the newst version of the program. But when you could do that and I couldn't I checked again. Seems like I did not have the newest version. After upgrading I can do what you did originally and it all works now!

    Thank you so much for your patience and help!

    Pfew! Glad we got it sorted.

    (I believe in a former version it´s just: text - add Stroke - Stroke to Path - Union. The grouping stuff is new - and annoys me)
