I will need to write some text in a language such as German, or Swiss. Because of this I need to use some characters that are not on my keyboard. So in the Inkscape editor I need to use Unicode characters. So I first selected Arial text, then I selected "Text | Unicode Characters".
Now I can see the Unicode characters in the lower right corner of the editor, but how do I get these Unicode letters to type on my Inscape screen? As you can see from my screen snapshot I am typing the letter A but no umlaut is being displayed over the letter "A" ?

You're almost there in your screenshot. Double-click the text object to get the text editing cursor. Now the [Append] button should be enabled.
