Beginners' Questions how do I put measurements on the screen ?

    Hi,

Is it possible to draw an item such as a panel with brackets along its length and add measurements on the page.

I can draw a box and then use the measurement tool but the numbers that show disappear when I let go of the mouse button.

I would like to e able to print the work with the measurements still showing and be able to scale them so I can print a finished drawing of a product 6 feet long with brackets every few feet.

    Thanks.

When you´re using 1.0 you can try Path->Path Effects...->Measure Segments. It will update interactively:

I don't have 1.0 looking at the website I see now way of just upgrading. Do you recommend I clear my present version off my computer before installing the 1.0?

Uh - better don´t ask me - I´m on macOS and have 3 versions installed and in use (not at the same time of course) - I don´t think it´s a good idea on Linux or Windows. I could be wrong - just reading through the forums.

There is an arrow button in the Measurement tool controls that adds the dimension line and value.

I have upgraded to 1.0 and succeeded in getting measurements.

I have been a while because I can understand that I need to try to get it myself but there are a few options that are beating me.

I would like it to be in inches but if I change from mm to inches the arrows disappear and the end lines become blocks. I can't seem to get inches in the same visual format as mm?

I would also like to just have the sizes on one side of the box like you have on yours.

Am I limited to measuring segments, i.e. the size of boxes?

Can I measure between one point and another, i.e. from the wall of one segment to the centre of another?

Would someone please show me how these are done?

    thanks.

Before we get too far, have you considered using CAD for your diagrams? Fusion 360 is free for hobbyists.

I think I have a graphics card problem. My present card has no updates for windows 10. Most programs work but cad programs like fusion 360 , freecad  etc seem to crash on loading.

I have inkscape and it works but I think it is not sufficient for my requirements.

I have a new graphics card on order. I will wait and see if that improves anything.

I don't understand what I am missing there, draw a bunch of paths, added the measurement segment effect on them, played along with the effect parameter, but whatever I do, nothing is visible on my drawing...

Note that I'm creating a sketch in cm, quite big, like the document is 4 meters wide, don't know if that could be related

I would try setting the label text size to 300 or more. The value can be typed into the path effect dialog.

    👍

Yes thank you ! Its definitely related to the scaling of my document ! I can now see my measures :D
