Hello, I'm a VERY beginner with Inkscape, and I know how to bevel text in Photoshop, bur how is that done in Inkscape. I would like to use the "filters> bevels" feature, but don't quite know how to get the text to do it. I have the text I want to bevel in a separate layer. In Photoshop, I can just hit effects and get it there. But I'm totally new to Inkscape and can't figure out how to get this effect. Thank you for any suggestions you may have, and please respond as if you are talking to a noob, with all explanations detailed for each step, even if it seems obvious to you. I will not be insulted, and it might help my not having to ask for what seems to be simple steps. ๐คช๐
Inkscape's built-in filters will probably get you close to Photoshop's filters, but Iย don't know what you want to achieve. Can you upload an image that you want to duplicate?
Thank you, both Tyler Durden and Paddy_CAD, for getting back to me. I know I'm not explaining myself very well, but besides being a noob (actually in a solid 10 hours into Inkscape, but it was a very INTENSE 10 hours. ๐ So I'm making a business card for myself. I made it on Photoshop and was very happy with it. The print place said it has to be pdf/X1a format. I'm using Photoshop 7 (Hey, I have it, it's paid for and I know how to use it.) ๐คช Anyhow, I can't get it to give me that format. I did the 300dpi, the extended canvas size and the bleed factored in, I'm using CMYK colors, and I saved it all as a Photoshop PDF, as instructed. But it indicates that I'm supposed to then have the ability to choose the PDF/X1a from the dropdown. (I have no dropdown.) It goes on tp say on the compression tab, choose do not downsample (I don't have that option),and on output tab, to select color conversion: NO Color conversion (I don't have that either). Pretty easy to follow, but I just don't have those options. When I uploaded the file, it stated that I have the wrong file format (just PDF instead of PDF/X1a). So I got Inkscape thinking I could probably learn how to get a pdf/X1a format on that, since i got the latest version. I downloaded it this morning before 6am and then TOTALLY immersed myself in learning how to set itย up and use it. I read the parts of the help file/manual that I needed. I watched you tube videos. I googled about 469 questions and got great answers that helped me figure out whatever little annoying thing I couldn't figure out intuitively. (My neck and back are killing me. Haha. I even lost all track of time and forgot to eat.) So I put together a replica of what I did in my photoshop business card that I designed except for one thing. On Photoshop, my name is beveled, and looks kind of cool. (Well, cool for me, and also cool in MY mind. ๐) I did the same thing to a vector design and it looks great, and I wanted to do the same thing with my name. But I don't know how to turn text into a png vector with no background. I would like my name, Elise Leonard, in Times New Roman bold, 18 points as a vector so I can put it in asย layer and then do the same bevel that I did with the vector image (I used Bevels> Combined Lighting, and it looks great, in my humble opinion). Even if it is black, I can then use the Hex CMYK color in Inkscape I'm using for my name is F5d268ff. In Photoshop it's #F7D56E (they're both close enough to the nice gold color I want to use on a black background).
Also since I have your attention, how do I make the document have 300dpi? I saw how to save it as that, but can I work with that in the original document? If so, how do I do that, and where?
Thank you so much for your advice and also I thank you, in advance for your further advice. I hope I've explained myself more fully. I don't really know the jargon. ๐
Oh wait, it just blocked my reply. I don't know why. I took off the jpgs. How do I attached jpgs?
Hi, I am sure the guys here will answer you about the bevel question, they are very helpful, but in reply to your longer post, your existing file is probably okay.
x1a is a standard, and I am surprised the printshop does not have the software to do the conversion for you, [read they probably do] although they may charge.ย You could do a web search for a PDF to pdfx-1a converter, or you could go back to your Printer with your finished fileย and ask them to convert for you, or you could try ghostscript.
In the printing trade, companies tend to specify copy to a standard to reduce prepress time. This is not so obvious with a business card, but if you can imagine the copy for a magazine with hundreds of pages in a company that prints hundreds of mags a month, the work involved in pagination etc, can be considerable.

I'd start by trying the Bevels>Specular filter, which allows live preview of various settings.

This is what I COULD bevel in Inkscape...
