Beginners' Questions How can I fill the canvas with gradients?

    Hello everyone

This is my first post and I'm coming from the digital painting background. What I would like to do in Inkscape first and foremost is to fill the canvas with a gradient or color just like traditional painters do for blocking.

I tried to cover the canvas with a shape for a start, but found out that I could't snap the shape exactly to the canvas just as I do in Illustrator. Is there a way snap a rectangle shape to precisely cover the canvas? Or is there a way to select the entire canvas and fill it with a gradient/color like you do in Photoshop?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks for reading!

A point on terminology: the Canvas is the infinite plane in the work area. The Page is the defined region, similar to an "artboard" in other illustration programs.

Snapping to the Page can be enabled:

I checked the link and it turned out that what's called canvas in Corel Painter is the page in Inkscape, so what I want to achieve is to fill the default page in Inkscape.

I made sure Enable snapping was checked yesterday, but Inkscape wasn't showing me any sign of its snapping feature, so I couldn't snap the shape to the corner of the page for the life of me. However, just a while ago, I toggled the magnet icon on and off to get the snapping feature working! So, thanks, the problem solved!

It's possible the new snapping is wonky. If you get a reliably repeatable malfunction, it can be reported as a bug.
