well I fought with a dxf and changing line color but updating my inkscape has helped that but I still have lots of issues.

so the file I have is a dxf of a split letter k  in the middle you should be able to insert text . well I can't seem to get the dxf to do much like go to path or union once I add text 

how do i make the dxf usable as i really like to get the alphabet worth of these but not much use if can't do anything

Here's how I might approach this:

• Import the DXF to Inkscape.
• Ungroup until there is only the symbol.
• Convert the symbol to a group by clicking the "break clone links" button (Shift+Alt+D).
• Ungroup.
• Combine the upper portion objects, then combine the lower objects.

Save, then Save-as another file before adding custom text.
