Beginners' Questions Filling Line Logo and converting it to Vector format

    Hello,

I am new to Inkscape and vector imaging, but I have experience with Photoshop. I am making a logo, and because I am an engineer I found it easier to draw the lines in SolidWorks and then exporting it as a Dxf file.

I imported the Dxf file to Inkscape but I am unable to fill it with the colors I want. And I don't know what steps first I need to take and how to fill it with colors, how to get rid of the outlines (or fill them) and how to save it as a vector image.

I am attaching two files: one is the black outlines in Dxf file, and the other is the coloured logo made in Paint (PNG format).

Can someone help me understand what I need to do to make the logo in vector format and colored?

    Thank you very much!

After importing the vectors into Inkscape, I would combine the paths I want to fill and remove the duplicated nodes.

The above is the easy one, the others will take some effort to select lines where they are colinear with other lines.

Thank you TD, how do I import the Dxf file as vectors into Inkscape? When I import the Dxf file I can't get the options you have...

What does tell the status bar when you select or call for Objects from the Object menu?

From my experience there´s no need to combine - just select with "S" - then grab Node tool and select everything to join:

    Nice shortcut! :)

@FadiJES , File>Import should allow you to select the dxf file, and may generate two dialog windows in the process: the first allows you to set scale, the second is SVG related and should be set to "Include" and 96 dpi.

The import icon tooltip mentions bitmaps or SVG files, and may confuse new users, since other filetypes can be imported.

Thank you TD very much! When I opened the Object window it worked. You are a life saver!!!

How can I save those 4 colors in the custom color palette? I don't want to open the Paint picture and use the i drop everytime. I want those 4 colors saved, is that possible?

Thanks should go to Pixel, I think.

Saving a palette is doable, but it might be easier to save a document with four objects having the trade-colors on the canvas (outside the page area). Then you have a lot more than just the colors saved, you have units, page size and much more.

Since I drew the Logo in SolidWorks (and exported it as a Dxf file) I know the x/y coordinates of every line (start point and end point). So I was wondering maybe I can recreate the logo in Inkscape with the coordinates I have. Can I draw a path with coordinate in Inkscape?

This way I can draw the paths of the white, black, and two orange colors boundaries separately. May be I can draw every color boundary on a separate layer (are there layers in Inkscape?)

I would skip coordinates for now.

Inkscape does have layers, best to test though, to see if your dxf layers carry over.

Update: Inkscape will bring the layers in as groups. The groups can be converted to layers in the Objects dialog.
