I used GIMP to convert a bitmap to 16-colour indexed png image, reducing the file size from over 1 MB to a modest 209 KB. I opened this in Inkscape as a linked image and doodled on top of it. The resulting svg is 20 KB. A slimline project.
I exported the finished design to pdf and was surprised to see that the file size ballooned to 405KB. I expected something close to 209+20 KB. If I remove the linked image the resulting pdf is 18 KB. When I changed the linked image to embedded, the resulting svg came in at 316 KB.
Is Inkscape resampling my bitmaps when embedding them? And again when exporting them? This isn't a problem for my workflow. I'm just trying to understand what's happening here.
