Beginners' Questions Editing Objects from Adobe

I am using Adobe Acrobat Standard 2020 and Inkscape 1.0.2-2.

When I attempt to edit an object from a PDF I am able to open the image in Inkscape and make changes without issue (so far, so good).

However, since the file is PNG, I am no longer able to save the file and have it update the PDF like it used to in previous versions. Instead I receive the following error message:

No Inkscape extension found to save document (C:-Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\FILENAME.png). This may have been caused by an unknown filename extension.

After doing a little bit of searching, it looks like the ability to save PNG files was removed (possibly related to different rendering engines being used for Save vs Export).

Unfortunately, exporting the image doesn't update the object in the PDF, so I'm not sure if that's a viable workaround - though, maybe I'm not doing it properly.

Has anyone else had success at editing objects in place from PDFs? Any tips would be most appreciated.

Try File > Save As, and select PDF from the 'save as type' drop down menu. You can also do File > Save a Copy.

Try File > Save As, and select PDF from the 'save as type' drop down menu. You can also do File > Save a Copy.

I have tried that, but it doesn't produce the desired results.

Instead of editing the object on the existing PDF (in the same location) it simply creates a new PDF consisting of only the edited object.

I suppose I could then try to copy/paste that object from that newly created PDF back into the original PDF, but that kind of defeats the purpose of being able to edit the object in place.

In older versions of Inkscape it was possible to edit the object, save the changes, and have the original PDF update automatically.

It's possible that this functionality is simply no longer available due to design changes (which, for all I know, may be better for the product overall).

But I figured I should reach out to the experts to see if maybe there was still a way to do this as easily as what was available before.
