Beginners' Questions Drawing a pattern for a flange or wheel

    Hi,

    ย

yes I'm a beginner.ย  I am trying to use this to draw what is basically a plate that bolts to a wheel to use as a support for a vise.

What I'm trying to figure out is how I can place 10 (ten) evenly spaced smaller circles inside a larger circle; i.e. like the bolt holes in a flange or wheel.

I did do a search, and nothing I typed gave any answers.

    Thank you.

Check out or search for Path-effect "Rotate copies".

    Alternatively :

    • Draw a first circle (hold ctrl + shift while drawing) with ellipse [shortcut : e] tool.
    • Duplicate the ellipse. Scale it down (hold Ctrl + shift) to make one "hole". Move it (hold control while moving) to place it where you want.
    • Now we will put the rotation center of this small circle on the rotation center of the big circle :
      • enable snaping to (only) : Other points > Rotation centers.
      • select [s] the small circle, click again on it to display rotation handles and rotation center (a cross)
      • click and drag on this cross toward the center of the big circle. Snapping will help you to put it on the rotation center of the big circle.
    • Now we will put 9 copies of this small circle in place (if you want to modify the size of the holes after, use clones instead of duplicates).
      • Open global inkscape preferences [ctrl+shift + P] : browse to behavior > steps : set "Rotation snaps every :" to 36 degrees (360ยฐ/10).
      • Select the small circle, click again to display rotation handles. During all this last step keep holding control key , begin to rotate the circle (as you hold ctrl it will rotate by steps of 36 degrees) and keep mouse button pressed : press space bar to leave copies.

    Hope this helps.

Here's something I prepared earlier. Not exactly what you asked for but easily adapted, though superseded by the [Rotate Copies] path effect.

I would prefer linking to the original post from 2021, but I can't find it. The forum search function is weak, to put it mildly.

BTW : the two links don't look to work.

Stupid me. Of course they didn't work. You're not Paddy_CAD!

    Hopefully these attachments work.
