I am trying to make several elements into one element using the Union tool. However, when I select everything then then use Union, a couple of my elements disappear. What am I doing wrong?
Status Bar is at the bottom of the Inkscape windows and displays hint&tipps&tricks etc.
From your screenshot: could be you have a mix of strokes and color filled shapes. Stroke must be converted with Path->Stroke to path before Path->Union will work.

What is Status Bar telling about your selection; is a group probably involved or path effects? Or post a screenshot.
I'm not sure where to see the Status Bar. None of the elements are grouped. Here is the screen shot.
