Assuming this is scan that has been traced. Assuming that the arrows are present in the original diagram.
You can edit the nodes in the trace, however I would suggest preprocessing using the eraser tool in GIMP and using undo (Ctrl +z) if you make a mistake.
You should be able to rapidly erase away unwanted areas, tick the 'Hard Edge' checkbox and use [ and ] to quickly modify size.
