Beginners' Questions Cutting paths

Hi! You might see what I'm trying to do here. If not, here I go: I'm trying to cut the straight lines so that they resemble a circle made out of lines.

    I can't succeed, so far

Can you tell me what I should do to finish this job? Thanks

    Leon

Tyler, I have some interest in what you just did, but am struggling with the method.  I'm trying to create arc segments that I can import into an industrial HMI to recreate the old Simon game:

    https://www.johnnybriones.com/blog/2015/12/2/how-to-beat-the-simon-game

I am trying to create two circles centred on top of each other with a cross in the middle to mask off the larger circle into arcs like the game.  Any help on the workflow?thx

Yes, that's pretty miuch what I mean. The first one, to be exact. I just can't get it that way. I suppose it can be done with path cutting. But it just doesn't do it. Please help me out.

Is ths a dumb question? I heard that those are the best questions to ask ;)

Yeah, the second one is the first "exploded" to show the stripes are separate objects.

No dumb questions... unless you already know the answer.

Watch very closely... many times... I can't slow down... server-space is consuming our planet.... ;)

    Have a nice day.

I'm not clear if you just want lines, or if you want filled stripes.  I would probably do it differently, if I only want lines.

    • draw the lines and the outer circle
    • select all the lines and do Path menu > Combine
    • duplicate the circle
    • select both circle and combined lines
    • Path menu > Cut Path (it might look like nothing happened, but actually each line has been cut where the circle intersected)
    • Delete the outer pieces of the lines that were cut

    Part 2

    • draw the inner circle
    • select the few lines that intesect the smaller circle, then Path menu > Combine
    • select the combined lines and the circle
    • Path menu > Cut Path
    • delete unwanted pieces

I just rendered this PNG file, so let me go ahead and include it.

    Brynn:

I want tiled lines. What you suggest I did  before, exceprt for combining the lines first, which I did now. Still no effect.

What I also tried is cutting the lines one by one, which doesn't work either.

I can only summarize this: I want to cut the lines so that they fit nicely in the left circle-image. It is upposed to be a mandala :P Thanks

Ooohh, ok.  Now that I see it, it makes more sense.  Before, somehow I did not connect the 2 images to each other.  If you are eventually going to color in the stripes, you need to follow Tyler Durden's video.

If you really just want the lines, what I said before should work, although you'll end up with an extra circle.  But here are new instructions, now that I see the whole thing.

    • select all the lines and do Path menu > Combine
    • select the outer circle and the combined lines
    • make sure the circle is on top in z-order
    • Path menu > Cut Path (The outer circle will disappear, and it might look like nothing else happened.  But actually, the lines have been cut where the circle crossed them.)
    • Delete the outer pieces of the lines that were cut

    Part 2

    • only a few of those lines need to be cut, to make the inner circle, so select only those, and do Path menu > Combine
    • select the combined lines and the circle
    • make sure the circle is on top in z-order
    • Path menu > Cut Path  (The circle will disappear, as before.)
    • delete unwanted pieces inside the small circle

And finally, you'll want to either Combine or Group the resulting lines, to make it easy to move them over to the main drawing.
