Can number one be done in inkscape. Can you slash an object and spread it?

I don´t understand the query.

If I create an object, can I slash the object and make a space between it, while maintaining the original object? ie if i close the space I can get back the original object. The above image is an example of that. 

There´s a slicing tool in the Path effects that´might do what you want.
