I have used a site called tinywow.com to convert my JPG to an SVG file, however, when I open it in the Inkscape space it is all black and doesn't have any background.
Is there a reason this happens? How do I correct that?
Inkscape might do a better job, but it is always better to start with the highest resolution bitmap image.
