Beginners' Questions clipping/cropping image AND paths

    Hi all,

Sorry in advance if I have missed this answer elsewhere. I'm a newbie here, but I have a question I can't seem to find a solution for.

I've created a contour map and saved it as an SVG. There isn't any way for me to accurately crop that map before getting into inkscape so there are portions that fall outside of my guides and canvas. When I clip the map with a rectangle running along the guides it eliminates the lines, polygons, and colors perfectly, but still leaves the paths/vertices of those objects outside of my guides. The goal is to laser cut the map, and from what I've read it's a big no no to leave those paths there as the laser will still recognize them as cut/etch commands.

Does anyone know a method where I could clip/cut the map while eliminating those paths too? Or is the only method to go in and individually delete each vertex outside of my guides?

    Thanks!

I would use this extension to recursively cut all the paths that extend beyond the page.

Thank you! This looks promising. I will give it a go tomorrow after work and report back. Since you're familiar with the extension would you have any suggestions for me jumping in? I mentioned it, but I'm green to this stuff. so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The extension will perform Boolean operations on multiple paths.

More on these types of operations: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Combining.html

    Hi Tyler,

I'm sorry I've been distant for a while. Life gets in the way sometimes. I'm having some trouble still, I'm 100% sure it's on my own ignorance, and I was hoping you could help.

I've downloaded the extension and copied it into my the extension folder to where it's been added to my available extensions, but when I click on it or hover the mouse it doesn't give me any of the options to union, difference, intersect, etc.

Any clue as to what I have done wrong? Again, I'm very green to this so any/all easy to understand help is very appreciated

    Should work much like this:

yeah! i watched another video after you sent the original link to the pathops, but what I'm saying is that in the extension menu I have the boolean operations button, but I'm not allowed to choose anything there.

in yours when you hover it gives you all the choices, but mine does nothing, and clicking on the boolean operations doesn't do anything either.

    1. Describe your OS (your computer's Operating System: Mac/Windows/Linux/etc. & version).
    2. Describe the version of Inkscape and the installer you used (the file you downloaded from the website: .msi/.exe/.zip/other )
    3. Describe any special hardware being used, like tablet/stylus or multiple monitors.

rogr. I'm on windows 10, I'm not using any tablets or stylus', but I am using a second monitor, and I was in version .92. Which looks like that's the problem. In all honesty I don't remember whether it was the .msi .exe or .zip, but I've uninstalled the old version and can pick whichever you suggest of the 1.2 right now.

    I prefer the msi.

Im rocking and rolling! Thank you for your patience with me. Do you mind if I go through here for any other questions I might have using the extension? If I've learned anything it's that something always comes up.

No problemo... if the next question is unrelated, we'll start a new topic.

    Hey Tyler,

I've put down my project for a little while, but am having another issue with the pathops boolean extensions that I'm hoping you can help me sort through.

Going to the newest version of inkscape has allowed me to use the extension, but when I use a rectangle for intersection inside the guides or along the edges for difference it is manipulating pretty much all of the lines in the SVG, and even connects lines that aren't originally connected.

I'll try and recreate the problem when I'm home so you can see what's happening, but if there's any kinda checklist or simple f up you think I could've made I'm all ears. Thanks again for your time/help.

I'd ensure that all the objects are ungrouped, and hide and lock any rectangles that are not the top rectangle cutting tool... path ops cut is working here in that manner.

rogr. I believe that I've done that correctly, and you were right. there were 2 rectangles in the SVG from canvas size and guides in the GIS program that I made the map in. I'm still getting the same results though. It's like it correctly eliminates the lines/paths OUTSIDE of the gray rectangle, but all of the lines that are in the area of interest are changed from segments to connected, and for the life of me I can't understand how/why.

I'm going to uninstall/reinstall inkscape and the extension later today as a kinda blind effort to find the problem, but if you think there's anything else I could've done wrong I'm all ears. I can also send/post anything that you'd like to see if that makes it easier for you to help.

Thanks again for working with me. I'm super new, but with your help and some youtube videos I feel like I'm making progress to understanding inkscape.

    🙌*

Path>Difference/Union/Intersection/Division usually create closed paths... Path>Cut usually leaves paths open. I have been using Path>Cut for this topic.
