Am using Inkscape version 1.01 on a MacBook Air, Catalina OS. Can't change the rulers from pixels to inches or even mm. I have changed the Inkscape preferences and also changed the Document properties but the rulers remain in pixels. This makes version 1.01 unusable for me.
If I open Inkscape from my Mac app icon in the dock all is ok because it opens with a default template I made years ago and brought forward into each newer version when updating Inkscape. The default template has everything in inches with a default canvas of 24in x 36in with 0,0 at the lower left corner of the canvas. The problem is opening old drawings either by File>Open when Inkscape is already open or by Conrtol>Click (right clicking) all of my thousands of earlier versions drawings (most of which drawings I manipulate as to size, shape and fonts etc that everything opens in pixels.
This must be a glich or problem with version 1.01 and going from a 32 bit version to 64 bit. Also, all earlier versions used XQuartz for Mac downloads and version 1.01 doesn't require it. Mac Catalina OS will not support 32 bit Inscape versions otherwise I would just you an earlier 32 bit Inkscape. I don't want to degrade and reinstall an earlier version of Mac OS that supports32 bit Inskscape software.

If your old files is in pixels and maybe the viewBox is missing, you could easily fix them using a text editor before opening them in 1.0.1 like in the attached picture.
My old files are all in inches. 1.01 does not operate correctly. If one is working in inches and the document properties are set to inches the rulers should be in inches but they are not. There may be other issues too. Whatever! I just checked on my other MacBooAir that has Inscape vers .91 app. When I open Document Properties>Page and change the General>Default units to "feet' the rulers change to feet. The same for all of the other default units. Whatever units are set for the default the rulers change to that unit of measure. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH MACOS CATALINA INKSCAPE 1.01.
I DON'T KNOW WHY SOMEONE AT INKSCAPE DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM.
No, your old file shared in the chat, Clipboard - September 30, 2020 11_51 AM.svg, was not in inches. It was in pixels. After fixing it, 1.0.1 opens it correctly.
I just downloaded the chat "Clipboard - September 30, 2020 11_51 AM.svg" that I posted the other day. I'm using my laptop with Mac Mojave OS and it has Inkscape vers 0.91 . In the chat I think I stated is was vers 0.92 - I was wrong about the vers but that doesn't matter.
Anyway, I just opened it from the chat download and the Document Properties, Page and Grid Tabs are in inches and so are the rulers on the document window.
Somewhere in the chat the other day I mentioned when I open one of my old files in vers 1.01 and change the Document Properties, Page and Grid Tabs, to inches the rulers stay in pixels. I cannot change the rulers to inches. It just doesn't work with the old drawings.
I'm done. I'll just keep an external drive with a bootable clone with Mojave and vers 0.91 on it and just restart with that Drive when I use Inkscape.
Sorry if I wasted everybody's time with this issue. Let's just let this be the end of this topic. I'm sick of talking about it and trying things to fix it as I'm sure everyone is who tried to help me.

Anyone know a solution for this?
Have you tried to save as a template with checked "save as default template" I guess it' s called after adjusting?

I thought we' re done in Chat with this case. 😯
It has never been resolved. No one has offered a solution that has worked for me.

I'm sure they see the problem, but there are bigger issues, especially with the Mac builds.
When I really needed some feature in Inkscape, I paid a programmer to build it for me.
