When I work, I shift the objects to the side and draw on and on where there is free room.... somewhen panning (and other small things) do not work any more.
Then I hit "select all" and ctr + shift + R, to adjust the page to all me items on the canvas.
Is there a configuration, which puts this into the background and fit the page to my items without extra keys? I would like my Inkscape just to let me draw without worry about a page size or not.
thanks for the answer. I have shortcuts already (see posting).
What I search for is a preference setting for this. Without icon clicking and without hotkey. Just like it is "A4" at the defautl. It shall be "user items as needed" by default.

Thank for hints!
The number 4 key near the top of the keyboard will show all your visible objects.
Same as the button in the Commands Bar.

Thank you for the answer. Unfortunately this icon does not do the above two key-hits.
It would be great even NOT to use an icon, but to "have" the canvas just this adjusting way.
You can create your own keyboard shortcuts, there are several options in Preferences.
