Hi, I'm comparatively new to Inkscape (though not to similar apps). I have what seems to be the simplest, most basic problem, which is that try as I might, I cannot create text that shows up on the actual canvas. I've scoured the manual, this forum and the internet, some of which offer fixes, but none have worked.ย ย
It seems like the culprit is that the fill is set to "none;" there's a box with an X in it at the lower part of the screen that appears to indicate this (screenshot attached). But try as I might, I cannot get it to change.ย
So far: I create the text box (which then disappears once I start typing). The text shows up in the right panel under "Text and Font," but not on the actual canvas. One series of instructions on the forum looked promising (Fill andย Stroke/Linear gradient - etc) but netted no result.ย
I run Mac OS 11.2.3 and have the latest version of Inkscape (1.4.2).ย

The swatch with the red x is for removing stroke or fill.
I suggest stepping through the Tutorials in Inkscape's Help menu.ย They cover many of these basic functions.
After that, one can use the online Manual (dated but mostly still relevant) for specifics like Fill and Stroke.ย http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes-Fill-Stroke.html
Select the text then [click] a coloured tile in the palette to set the text fill colour.
