I just installed the app and started using it. I went to Save As... but it will not let me save. It says the file does not exist - of course it doesn't exist, I am creating it. Any ideas?? I included a screenshot.

Is there definitely a folder called 'New folder' on the Desktop? Can you try saving in a different location?

I have tried saving to different folders and in different formats. That new folder is real. I created it on my desktop.

    Welcome to the forum!

Try giving the "New Folder" folder a name, besides "New Folder".  I agree with you that it should be working.  But giving the folder a different name would be the first thing I would try.

The next thing I would try is to open a new Inkscape document.  Copy the contents of the file you can't save into the new doc, and try saving that one.

    I've done all that.

What version of Inkscape? What OS version?

Does the username that is covered up in the posted screenshot match the username in the system page of Inkscape's preferences (Ctrl+Shift+P)?

Latest v of Inkscape from website. Using Win 10 64 bit. I'm not a tech newbie. I've done all typical issue resolutions. Program is correctly installed and correct paths are being used.

So it's not the version of Inkscape from the windows app store, but directly downloaded from Inkscape.org? Whats the build number (it can be copied from the About screen).

problem solved!! WIndows Defender would not let third party applicaitons save files. I noticed the same issue occur in other programs after this. I had to turn the setting off. I recently had a big windows update so it must have turned on.

Even though I'm still on Windows 7, I've stopped getting regular Windows updates, because it keeps turning things on that I want off.  I just go and get them on  my own, once in a while.  It keeps hiding files and folders that I don't want hidden.  I won't be long for Windows anymore though.  I'll be switching to Linux pretty soon.

@Jason Ryan: Thanks for posting the solution. I knew Desktop was considered a system folder, but the Documents folder was a bit of a surprise. I expect we'll get more users having this issue.

    Have a nice day.
