Beginners' Questions Can item be selected without showing the dotted lines?

Hi, I am quite new to Inkscape and right away as I started to work in it, I ran against an awkward feature. I have tons of images cut up into 60 pixel wide strips and I use Inkscape to join them back together.

Problem is that when I use arrows to nudge the selected image section to join it to the previous section, the doted selection line that surrounds the selected image piece gets in the way, it covers the 'joint'.

I have to bring the section near, click off to deactivate the selection line to see if the section is aligned, then select it to nudge it and deselect again to check on if the fit is as it should be.

Is there a way to switch the selection rectangle OFF and maybe only have some symbol in the middle of the image indicating it is the selected part? I wonder if there is such an option and hope I didn't come across a program shortcoming on the very first day of working in it.

Wanted to paste in an example but somehow can't add image here, maybe I don't have enough posts to post an image?

Thanks, I also found a post with related (really opposite) problem which set me in the right direction. Now I am back in business. 😀
