Hi, I would like to apologize in advance for my second beginner’s question.
I am still working on my first image in inkscape, it is finished and ready to send out for printing.
So the image I want to print is currently only a small part of the whole. The image has multiple layers and I want to export if for printing as it appears on the screen (visible layers)
If I was working with MS Paint I would simply drag a rectangle around the object and save it.
But with inkscape I am struggling to figure this out.
So far I have tried…
1 Edit - Resize page to selection
I can see the page, but when I I try to select the objects it only selects the visible top layers, when I go to move the other layers get left behind.
I have tried grouping the layers together, when I try to select the object after grouping I can’t seem to select it. It almost seems (unless I am mistaken) that grouping in inkscape should be called locking. Or is there a way to move grouped objects?
Presumably if I can find a way to select my grouped layers I can then drag it so it’s within the page boundaries then export as a png page.
2 File - Export PNG Image
When I try this the selection option seems like the best one, however when I click that it will not highlight it… the drawing button next to it highlights instead? With this option it doesn’t seem to matter what I select or click on nothing happens, it won’t select my object. I have a feeling this is the option I need, I can select page drawing and custom… everything except selection!
What I am untimately trying to achieve is to export an image, then take it on a usb down to my local copy centre to print out for me. So while I am asking stupid beginner questions I may as well ask one more, with png will it print the same size on a different printer, if not what format should I use.
As always I have used due diligence to watch a few tutorials but I can’t seem to get the hang of it, the tutorials I have seen all deal with a one or two layer image which doesn’t cover the problem I am having. As a beginner it is hard to know what to search for regarding tutorials because I don’t know which of the above methods I have tried is correct. So forgive me for stabbing in the dark.
P.P.S I have tried saving it as a png uncropped and then opening it and saving my selection in ms paint... but I have noticed a massive decrease it test print quality as well as a slight size change.
If I have the objects grouped together it wont select anything at all.
If I ungroup then it selects the top layers, but because my bottom layer is larger that the area I am selecting it doesn't size to where I wan't it to. In a nutshell it sizes to part of the image I want to select.
However it looks like the selection tab is available for selection now that I have ungrouped the layers.
I have just realized that I can probably fake Inkscape into selecting what I wan't... if I created a new layer and draw some stuff at the edges of what I want to select, then select, resize and hide the layer I should be able to make it work... but I am still thinking Inkscape must have a method for letting you select an area?

P.S. I have read this recent thread… https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/export-png-problems/

Does this not work for you?
No,
