I'm new to inkscape and trying to use the dimensions extension. It says you need to create an auxiliary line before applying the extension.

How do i create an auxiliary line?

    thanks

I don´t have to with version 1.1devel - it adds the segments automatically. Maybe have a look at the new "Measure Segments" LPE:

thanks , I have now installed the latest (Version 1) inkscape.  Thanks for the screen shot . how do u get to measure each individual segment  ? do you use the measure tool ?

Measure Segments will dynamically update all segments at once.

If I use the dimensions from the extensions menu it only adds the pointers to two main X- Y dimensions , not all segments . see the attached  screen shot.

if possible , could you please describe the method you use in steps ?

    thanks

This is the way Dimension extension works; showing you the max width+length of a shape/object.

    I´d try Measure Segments:

ok , thats exactly what i want. where do you find measure segments ?  I could not find it in the extensions

It´s an LPE= Live Path Effect. Go Path->Path effect while your object is selected and hit the "+" button and find Measure Segments.
