New user here. I was looking for some hints on setting up a default drawing page in the correct scale. I'm a Contractor(carpentry) and I will sometimes draw or modify some simple plans for residential projects, such as renovations, sheds or garages. I use Chief Architect for most of the residential work, but sometime I get a set of drawings(PDFs) that have to be altered or amended for the client or the Building Dept. On my older computer I have CorelDraw which I use to import PDFs and alter as required.
However I just got a couple new laptops and CorelDraw is just too expensive for the couple of drawings I do a month, soย I wanted to try Inkscape. It seems like a great program but I'm a old dog and it's hard to learn new tricks. I have known of Inkscape for a while and had tried it briefly about ten years ago. but have always had Corel (though my other job) and was used to It.
I've looked online at a few tutorials but I can really find what I want, most of it is more "artistic" andย my drawing abilities is limited to stick figures. What I would like is a real world dimension and to set page size to the drawing. i.e. I want inkscape set in inches/feet or Meters (i work in both) and a drawing scale set to (say 1/4" to 1') and where I use accurate dimensions.
if I could get a few pointer it would be appreciated.
So here is three samples, what I would like is import these into Inkscape and say move a wall and be able to get the dimensions to other walls. I believe scale setting is the issue.
OK,, thanks Tyler, your instructions are appreciated.. The dimensions were getting me, I was just have a hard time figuring them out. I have to get use to doing things in a different way. I will also have to dig into the scaling more to see if I can achieve real world dimensions.
thanks again, now that I have a some "very" basic understanding and have made a few adjustments to the layout, scales and fonts things are looking much better.

Perhaps you can get something from this thread:ย https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/template-for-a-small-garden/
An example pdf file (something simple) would be helpful.ย
So here is three samples, what I would like is import these into Inkscape and say move a wall and be able to get the dimensions to other walls. I believe scale setting is the issue.
Perhaps this will help you.

On Sample 1, the PDF reader says the page is 28 x 18 inches.
ย
When opened in Inkscape the page size is also 28 x 18 (after changing units to inches).
Measuring the scale indicator in the drawing, we see the 1' measures 0.25"ย and 10' measures 2.5".
ย
So, no real issues there.
For dimensioning, there is a Path effect and an Extension, for linear segments. Arcs and other shapes will need to be done manually.

The measure Path effect and Extension have scale adjusters, but the units will be inches.
AFAIK,ย Inkscape has never had foot+inch units.
thanks again, now that I have a some "very" basic understanding and have made a few adjustments to the layout, scales and fonts things are looking much better.
I even found this Ext: https://alpha.inkscape.org/vectors/www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic562f.html?t=34831
I'll have to give it a try.
Unfortunately, that extension won't work with the current version of Inkscape, and the developer may not have made an update.
