Beginners' Questions 3D boxes tool

    Hi everyone!

I have two problems/questions related to the 3D drawing tool. I use Inkscape 0.92.4.

    1. I want to make 3D boxes stacked on each other. For that, I made a box, and copied it, then placed the copy on top of the original. As you can see on the attached picture, since the lines are not parallel, the boxes do not fit on each other correctly, there is a gap forming. How could I solve this problem? Or is there an easier, neat way oh doing my box stacking?

    2. The other thing is the observation, that if I copy my boxes, the size changes, the boxes get smaller. Of course, I can change the size easily, but I am curios of why this is happening.

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum!

The 3D box tool creates automatic perspective.  You'll see if you draw a box on the other side of the page, it's a very different box.  The only way to make a box stacked on another box, is to draw it there in the first place.

I don't know why copying a 3D box makes it smaller.  I don't think it should do that.  Do you copy/paste by key shortcut, or buttons on the command bar?  Did you maybe copy it before you scaled it?

Which operating system?  That's probably a bug, unless there's more info we don't know yet.

If you're on a Mac, there is a known bug with pasting, but it's not making it smaller. It rasterizes the previously vector contents:  https://inkscape.org/learn/faq/#copypaste-rasterizes-objects

If you duplicate it vs copying, does the size change, just curious?

    Maybe this?

Hi! First, thank you for your answers, now I understand what was the problem with the stacking. Tyler Durden, thank you very much for the video, this way it works perfectly and very quickly!

About the resizing, I work on Win10 Enterprise, and it happens with shortcuts, as well as with buttons. Also, it's interesting, that duplicating has an enlargening effect, while copying shrink the size. The ratio of resizing always around 3.78.

Would you be willing to test with 1.0beta2?  This sounds like a strange bug that I've never heard of.  I just would want to be sure it's not in the upcoming new version as well.

Here's the main link for 1.0beta2, but if you need help finding the Windows version, let us know and we can give you the specific link.  https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0/?latest=1

Hi! Sorry for the late answer. I tried the 1.0beta2 version, and I am experiencing the same resizing effect, as before. Should I report this as a bug?

    Hi,

I am experiencing exactly the same issue. My 3D object is enhanced when I duplicate it, while its size is reduced when I copy/paste it. I am using Inkscape v0.92.4 on Windows 8.1.

I would be interested as well if someone has a work-around for this particular problem.

    Thanks !

Sorry, I did not find any solution besides manually resizing the copied/duplicated object.

For those of you who experience the same issues of reduced boxes when copying and increased boxes when duplicating, use the Edit->Clone option :)

Worked for me with version 1.0.2.
