It looks as if you are using a fill stitch. The fill stitch is usable for bigger areas to fill.
For outline art you will prefer satin columns. They will look much better, but it is also a little bit of work to prepare them.
Since your outline has not much of a varying width, you can also try to convert your fill to a stroke first and then set the width and convert the strokes to a satin.

For this simple outline design (10x10cm) I have 11000 stitches which seems not normal.
How can I fix this or what I am doing wrong.
