Using Inkscape with Cutters/Plotters Unable to upload Inkscape svg into Cricut Design Space

All of a sudden I cannot upload a created svg in Inkscape to Cricut Design Space. I have always been able to do this until a couple of days ago. In contacting Cricut, the answer I get is that it does not recognize svg files from Inkscape (no explanation as to why now).  I can open an Inkscape file into Adobe Illustrator, but have to export it from that program for it to be an accepted upload to Cricut Design Space. Hoping this is something that Inkscape developers can fix quickly!!!

I've just tested on Windows 10, Design Space version 8.30.

You are correct, Design Space no longer accepts Inkscape svg files.

However, all you have to do is File>Save a Copy and choose 'Plain SVG' from the dropdown.

    Works fine.

    -----------------------

The error message relates to some custom element tags / attributes which Inkscape uses to give extra functionality above the svg standard.

Normally, third party programs should ignore this.

I just tested, again, on Cricut Design Space Beta Version 8.31.60 ( also tested Live version a few minutes earlier). I still get the error codes.  See attachment. :(

By any chance you have some special characters in your file name? Just guess work.

    And what does that mean:

You can use the XML-editor to delete the metadata before saving as Plain SVG.

This is a failing in the Design Space software.

Those tags / attributes should be transparent to the 3rd party software.

Hopefully they will update and correct.

Otherwise, I have will to write something to do further stripping. ( which is not ideal )

I use Design Space with my Cricut Maker :(

I am also having the same issue. UGH. I thought I was going crazy. It was fine a few days ago. I contacted Cricut and did all kinds of tests and they had no answer for me, so I am glad its not my computer. It lets me upload those same SVGs that is sent to my phone though so IDK why it wont let me from my laptop.

No, I do not have any special characters in the file name.
I find that as I continue to test this issue, sometimes I have different results. The other day, if I did a trace bitmap and then saved it would upload to Cricut ok. Haven't tried it in the last couple of days.

This is so frustrating!!! Thank you all for your feedback.
Aero, your suggestion is not something I am familiar with. But, thank you for your suggestion!

I was referring to the error message in your post #3. I could reproduce it in Cricut Design Space by adding data in the Metadata tab in Inkscape Document Properties.

Metadata is not removed by saving as Plain SVG. You either need to remove it manually or save as Optimized SVG where Remove metadata is an option.

I finally got Cricut to figure out something. I’m not sure if it was just me, but they had me go to my cricut window and click on my name and go to settings and choose Beta version and it fixed it. I did this the other day and it didn’t work, but when they contacted me back, they said they had fixed the issue and NOW to use Beta version and so far so good.

Thank you for that explanation Aero! I definitely will look at that!

And, thank you for this information christi992!  I generally use Beta all the time. I will check it out now and see if the fix has gotten to me!!!!

I uploaded an svg design from Inkscape to the updated Cricut Design Space Beta version  ----  worked for me! (Knock on wood) I hope it stays this way!
