I've recently started using Inkscape to convert files to svg for design space.  I try to load the picture.  I browse and find it and click it to load.  My cricut goes into a "browse" loop and won't load the file.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

There are different "flavors" of SVG files that Inkscape can export, when you choose "File > Save As" you might try selecting a "Plain SVG" instead of the default "Inkscape SVG" and try it once further with that file? There are other options for how to save SVG files (as you can see from that list of types) which may also be more appropriate for importing to design space. But to start, see if that helps to use a Plain SVG, or try the Optimized SVG next.

Aah ok.  This is a raster image (PNG) in the SVG file.  So it's not made of vector paths.  Probably the Cricut needs vector paths to cut.

You can convert it to vector using Path menu > Trace Bitmap.  The default settings will probably work just fine.  Note that the results will come out right on top of the image, and it might look like nothing happened.  But you can grab the original image and drag it out of the way.  Then you can see the paths.

The bumblebee might be tricky to cut, because you can see that there are a lot of tiny open spaces in the middle.

Ooohhh....  Actually this image is made in what I consider to be an unusual way - using masking.  It might take a bit of trickery to be able to get the vector paths using Trace Bitmap.  And I probably don't know the right tricks.  I unmasked it, but then there are 2 separate images.

Ok, here's what I would do.  But someone else might have a better idea.

• select the image
• File menu > Export PNG
• File menu > Import (import the new PNG that you just created)

Now you can use Trace Bitmap on that image.

I'd do Edit > Make a Bitmap copy (might need resizing the image first).
