    Hi

Can I rename a color in a custom color palette? Thank you.

I guess this is what you're looking for: https://www.goinkscape.com/custom-color-palettes-in-inkscape/

Thanks very much Tyler, that is exactly what I was trying to do. Unfortunately it didn't work for what I want to do,  I currently use Corel Draw to create cut files for a Roland VersaCamm printer. The stroke spot colour needs to be called CutContour for VersaCamm to create a cut line. The file from Inkscape with a stroke colour called CutContour would not work. I guess I'll have to stick with Corel Draw.

    Thanks anyway

Ah, you need to have spot colors in Inkscape... SVG doesn't have support for spot colors (and/or Inkscape hasn't implemented them).

These are solutions: https://alpha.inkscape.org/vectors/www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic6c8b.html (it's the archived previous forum, so no commenting possible there)

Here is another discussion on the topic: https://lists.inkscape.org/hyperkitty/list/inkscape-user@lists.inkscape.org/thread/K35WYHEA6IGBC276UEIJRZOLUWK5D5CN/?sort=date

Here's a possible workaround for our specific context:

    • as you probably know, HTML/CSS has a set of named colors next to the hex based ones (e.g. "red" and "teal" are colors, but there are many more)
    • if you only use 2 colors, what you could do, is open a text editor, and replace the hex value of your color by the string value you want it to be. This may break visual rendering, but could work out for your plotter.

If you could share a simple example of an svg made by CorelDraw that seems to work, we could look into the file and see how CorelDraw implemented it. The next step could be to turn that knowledge into a small inkscape extension.

Thanks for the advice Jurgen I really appreciate it however this is getting too complicated for me. I use Corel Draw in my very active business and it does everything I need and have no interest myself in converting to Inkscape. I know over a dozen children in the 10-14 age range and I have put together a list of free software that they could "play" with while learning real world skills. Thanks again Jurgen

I thought it would be fun and helpful that my young friends could create files that I would use to print and cut out for them.

This still seems viable for a couple of reasons:

    • There may be an extension for output to the Roland.
    • The Inkscape SVG files sent from the community can be opened in Corel and printed/cut. A color substitution (e.g color x -> CutContour ) could be added as a macro in Corel.

    Hi Tyler

Are you saying there might be an extension for Inkscape that would export the file to my Roland directly without out first taking the file into Corel so I can assign the cutline properly? If that is possible that would be exactly what I want.

Right now I can take an Inkscape file into Corel and and assign the cutline easy enough but for the longer term I want to go directly from Inscape to a Roland printer using Versacamm.. That way my young friends can prepare their files on free Inscape  and cut on any  Versacamm printer without the detour to a Corel subscription.. I hope I have explained my self. Thank you.

At the local makerspace we use an Inkscape extension with a 24" Roland vinyl cutter. Other extensions may be out there on the webs.
