    We challenge you to:

Create a texture from scratch with seamless patterns or filters (and apply it to an object)

Texture, in this context, refers to an imitation of an object's surface. E.g. wood, steel, rusty metal, brick, stone (rough or polished), concrete, leather, cotton, velvet, satin...

Let's see what you come up with!

While we know we are going to get some stunning artwork, we also want to encourage beginners. If you are new to Inkscape, feel free to keep it simple.

Multiple entries are welcome, and please do stick around for the chat!

All abilities are invited to get involved. The complexity of your entry is down to you.

Please post your finished artwork below.

IMPORTANT: If you would like to know what you could do to improve your artwork, add the phrase to your comment: "Brutal Feedback" --- only for those with nerves of steel! (Please include a brief description of your process, difficulties you have experienced and your desired outcome).

Because of limited resources, moderators may not always be able to give feedback.

    Please spread the word!
    #inkscapechallenge

When finished, post the final graphic to this thread.
    • There are no winners (HOWEVER, WE MAY SHARE ARTWORK WHICH STANDS OUT WITH THE INKSCAPE COMMUNITY). These challenges are intended to inspire, to encourage you to share your work and to build a supportive community.
    • If you post your artwork here, you agree for us to share your artwork and use your artwork to create a banner for social media - to opt out, add "Please don't share" to your post.
    • Please don't post artwork containing AI generated graphics. as it can be hard to see what you (the artist) has produced using Inkscape.

    TO ALL CHALLENGERS:

Due to the popularity of last month's challenge, I thought it might be fun to explore this area further by creating 'textures'. I have used the term textures loosely (any surface: wood, grass, fur, concrete) and have included the use of filters. Feel free to experiment. I look forward to seeing what you come up with and how you apply them!

Great work, @Lazur This was an attempt to do something metallic, dirty and weathered. It's from December 2023 challenge.

    Thank you @mrks9 !

Looks like you used some raster images too on that metal texture.

Brushes are indeed a challenging idea!

This one was drawn about the same time as the previous one.

@Lazur Actually in this case I didn't use images, just patterns to which I added some filters and played with the layer styles.

    Lazur Lazur @Lazur

@mrks9 The pattern fill used was probably based on a raster image?

For grungy metal made some filter packs and that kind of variance would need more noise filter primitive options.

Sunset, sea and sand. The point was to create a seawater texture. The (kind of) sand effect is made the same way as the sea with the addition of: Filters>Morphology>Cross Smooth. I think, some noise would make the sand look better.

I tried to make brushed steel texture from scratch by adding lots of rectangles to my grey background and giving them different colors and opacity and skewing some. I made black matte plastic by using film grain under image effects under filters and adding a black semi transparent gradient on top.

I will submit a version 2 of my entry, because I felt like the plastic was not shiny enough, even though it was supposed to be matte. This is my final entry, I need to process texture in my head and learn more about it now.

    Cave art.
I first exported a test image to see how it looks. I wasn't happy with the lettering and the size of the image (too small). So, I went back to Inkscape and changed those.
But as I was trying to get a screenshot, Inkscaped crashed and silly me, I forgot earlier to save my work. So, this displayed here, is the test image.😭

Earlier, I forgot to mention that this time I didn’t use the Bumps > Paper Bump filter as I did for the cave wall. Instead, I used the Textures > Rough Paper filter.

Are you considering entering the About Screen Contest?

There appear to be fewer entries this year, which increases the chance of getting your artwork in the top 5.

You have about 9 days to get your entry submitted. So plenty of time to come up with a solid concept and start crafting.

Even if you don't think your artwork will win, the Inkscape team may still use your artwork on the website or on social media.

We look forward to receiving your entries.

@pacer Hi Pacer, I am working on it... I just hope to meet the dead line.🧐
Questions: -Is it okay if I use a Microsoft font?
-Is it okay if I also use a GitHub font (100% free) that you neither can find in Google Fonts, nor in Font Library?

Definitely. It is in the making. Need to take some advice from Bob Ross.

I'm afraid we can't use a Microsoft font.

All that matters is that the license is right. The font must have an open source license.
"Any text in your image must use a font with an open source license (OFL, GPL, Apache, MIT, PD/CC-0, CC-By-SA, ...)."

If the font on GitHub has a compatible license, I think it will be acceptable. Just link to the font in the description when you upload so we can check the license.

If you struggle to find a suitable font, just post a font that you like in the challenger chat thread and I/we will do our best to help you find something with a compatible license.

Also, if an open source font isn't exactly as you want it, you could modify it.

    @pacer
-Yes, the GitHub font I mentioned earlier fulfills the conditions: "This is an Open Source Font, licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1."
-Luckily, there are a lot of similar fonts to the Microsoft font in Google Fonts.🙂

    -Thank you!

    @Andchan re:brutal feedback

With filtering you can generate textures that'd fit well with the design and bevels etc.

Made some images and filter packs before focusing on the textures, shared at openclipart so you can give those a try too:

    https://openclipart.org/detail/289206/plant-remix-3

    https://openclipart.org/detail/289205/organic-filter-pack

    https://openclipart.org/detail/271666/stone-pack-2

    https://openclipart.org/detail/271670/stone-pack-3

    https://openclipart.org/detail/271676/stone-pack-4

    https://openclipart.org/detail/271687/stone-pack-5

(I'll definitely look into how to use the filter editor, creating tutorials.

Although this challenge is giving the perfect opportunity, focusing on making an entry for the about screen contest.

Also worth mentioning that these days the dev and ux team is working on redesigning the filter editor into a node-based one.)

Combining every bit of the tile texture into a filter is just too complicated.

Much easier to break it down to smaller parts.

Texture for the tile; texture for the grout/sand/mud; a bevel on an overlay layer.

    Handling the flora separately.

And to top it off, making it a seamless base tile is another challenge.

In your filtered image the stone parts are blurred and the green parts are sharp, which makes it a bit unrealistic.

Also a little variance in the shapes and colours would help further.

  38. #38
    Lazur Lazur @Lazur

OK, got inspired to make a concrete tile pattern, textured using filters.

Here is a tiling I wanted to recreate:

    https://tinyurl.com/2mjnn4jb

Tweaked some of those filters linked above, with additional "bump maps" and bevels.

Rendering and editing is a bit slow so didn't improve it any further.

The diffuse lighting in the grout has too dark shadow, the overall "dust" noise is too repetitive and the moss shape could be tweaked more.

This kind of stuff is way faster in blender.

    Nevertheless, sharing the svg here:

    https://openclipart.org/detail/347793/concrete-tile-pattern-filtered

edit: Made an extended version and a seamless one too.
