I just upgraded to Inkscape 1.0 and I'm getting incredibly frustrated by the small changes to the text editor, but the single biggest one is this:
I used to be able to select text, select a new font, and then use the up and down arrows to scroll through the fonts and watch my text change. I think I've gotten it to work once in the new Inkscape, and I have no idea why it worked then and not any other time.
I know it seems like a small thing, but it makes using text much more frustrating. Is this a bug or the new normal?
Then I'm not doing something right. I still can't get it to work. After your post, I tried hovering my cursor over the font list and using the up and down arrow keys, spinning the mouse wheel, holding down and spinning the mouse wheel... whatever the right vulcan death grip is, I can't get it to work.
Tyler, I'm on Windows 10 Home v 1903 OS build 18362.836, and I used the inkscape-1.0-x64.exe installation (the 1.0 (4035a4fb49, 2020-05-01) build, to be exact).
The first thing I would try is to rename your preferences file to preferences_old.xml. Inkscape will create a new default preferences.xml. (It will clobber any special preferences you have set up, but you can revert back if it doesn't work.)
You can check your Inkscape Preferences>System for the location of the file.
I have the same issue in the most recent version (1.2.1). When I try to scroll the fonts using arrows, it starts to loop using the first 7? fonts. Indeed, if you go and scroll down using the mouse and selecting one font in the middle, and after that you start to scroll using the arrows, suddenly it jumps to the first ones and loops again. I have tried deleting preferences.xml file but there is no luck. Any other tip?

It still works here by applying the cursor to the font list while an text-object is selected:
@daviddeen, What OS and which installer?

Clicking the the font selector makes it work here in Ubuntu/Mint.

Works here in Win8 64bit. Gotta click within the font selector, not just hover.
I promise you, I've tried clicking on the font selector, too.

Then I'd see if the issue persists.
That fixed it, thank you!
I hadn't set any preferences in the new version, so it must have been some interaction with the old version.
