I want to make a lot of somewhat-related scientific diagrams, and it would be nice to re-use shapes between them. Is it possible to create a "shape palette" of my commonly used shapes? Is there some extension for this? One way to do this would be to write my own extension, like https://github.com/fsmMLK/inkscapeCircuitSymbols, but that seems kind of overkill.

It is commonly referred to as a symbol library, and you can make your own, to use across documents.
