I can't tell with your screenshot loop when it starts or finishes. I would like to be able to keep the color and the 3-D integrity, but doesn't look like that is possible.
I have tried many combinations of clipping, masking, and many combinations of trace-bitmap to no avail. They are only about an inch and a half tall, (refrigerator magnets)
My intent is to be able to cut them out and enlarge them to look like they are sitting on a snow covered roof for Christmas so the background snow will show through and spell out different words.
This thread is placed in the "Beyond the Basics" section by you. I therefore assumed that you already had experience with Inkscape. I assumed you wanted the "A" to be cut out of a background - as the title suggests. The new information gives a different picture.
I´d go this route:
1. with the Bézier-tool draw the outline of the letter and the hole like in the "A" as close as you can. Select either the inner or outer stroke and go Path->Reverse - this will maintain the opening for the next step.
2. Select both curves and go Path->Combine - this is now your clipping path
3. Select clipping path and bitmap image and go Object->Clip set.
Masks works with the lightness of color hues: white will show while black will hide (makes transparent). In your case you´ll need a white "A" to mask it from the background.
How do you cut or snip or trace out a letter from a background?
I know how to get the outside of the letter out from the background, but I don't know how to get the center out.
I want to be able to cut letters out and insert them into other pictures with out the current background existing.
I uploaded a screen shot of the a picture that I hope will convey the point.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

For me it´s drawing a rectangle larger than the image you want to clip plus the clipping path combined:
Clip inverse should do it but never worked here.
Mask would be fine as well.
Polygon,

Thank you and Tyler for your help.

I attached an example for you to play with:
Polygon,
That worked out perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you.
